Bird-Friendly New Haven

Bird-Friendly New Haven is a collaborative initiative aimed at promoting the use of native plants to support pollinators in the New Haven area. Led by Doreen Abubakar, Executive Director of CPEN-Community Placemaking Engagement Network, and in partnership with Neighborhood Housing Services, Audubon CT, Highstead, and the New Haven Pollinator Pathway.

Goals

  • Promote native plants for pollinators.
  • Increase biodiversity and habitat for birds and other wildlife.
  • Enhance the beauty and ecological value of public spaces.

Partnerships

  • Collaborating with Neighborhood Housing Services, Audubon CT, Highstead, and the New Haven Pollinator Pathway.
  • Coordinating efforts to green New Haven and plant natives city-wide.

CPEN-Community Placemaking Engagement Network's Urbanscapes Natives Nursery Project

CPEN-Community Placemaking Engagement Network’s Urbanscapes Natives Nursery Project is a joint venture with the Menunkatuck Audubon Society aimed at establishing a native plant nursery in New Haven. Supported by Gather New Haven and with permission from the City, the project has launched with the installation of raised-bed gardens in two vacant lots.

Objectives

  • Create a native plant nursery to propagate and distribute native plants.
  • Increase availability and accessibility of native plants for residents.
  • Engage community members in environmental stewardship and urban greening efforts.

Impact

  • After five months of planting, watering, and nurturing, New Haven's first established Urban Native Plant Nursery has been launched.
  • Coordinating efforts to green New Haven and plant natives city-wide.
